THE WHITE HOUSE CHEF® exalts MLH with his White House State Dinners

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

What’s the best place for a White House State Dinner?  culinary creations from the white house himself will be served at Sri Lanka’s very own White House on 9th and 10th July 2011.

“For the last eleven years, I have had the honor of doing daily what most chefs would be lucky to do once in their life time. That honor was serving the First Family of the United States”. These are the words of Walter Scheib as his forte lies in serving up a taste in stories and recipes of his eleven years as the White House chef under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush from a unique vantage point: The kitchen, which will be presented to Sri Lanka on 9th and 10th July at the Mount Lavinia Hotel, where an all american dinners inspired by Walter Scheib will take centre stage.

“I had to cook everything from food for the first family to state dinners for 900 and picnics for 600,” recalled Scheib and continued to state that his job involved travelling all over the world with the President and First Lady.

Scheib’s White House achievement was his creation of a distinctly American repertoire for the nation’s First House. The evenings will be totally focused on all the White House remembrances that ranged from State Dinner Secrets to throwing the White House Birthday Party. He will touch on concepts such as White House style cocktail reception, First Lady Luncheons, State Dinners, and Outdoor “South Lawn” and Rose Garden barbecues and picnics and most of all the fascinating White House insider’s anecdotes, culinary insights, team building and bonding, as well as, exercises with a culinary twist; hands-on cooking demonstration and interaction. Yes, indeed the evening will be comprised of revealing anecdotes, photographs, menus, and special White House recipes—and indeed it will be a treat for everyone who loves food, politics, or both.

When asked about his memorable times at Sri Lanka’s White House: Mount Lavinia Hotel and The White House in the US of A, here were his comments. “A country is represented by its people. And the hotel along with the country exceeded my dreams.” He states just before when Chelsea Clinton left for college she spent six weeks with the Chef Scheib and after we had done with her we awarded her a certificate and the one and only graduate from the Walter Scheib White House Cooking School.

The two nights at MLH will be scheduled for 9th and 10th July…All nights will be a tasty 5 course menu with selected beverages for the price.

Saturday, 9th July – White House State Dinner from 8pm onwards at the Maitland State Room exclusively for Sampath Bank. Sampath Bank is partnering with the Mount Lavinia Hotel to offer a unique opportunity to their Infinite Cardholders, to meet and dine, with Chef Scheib. According to the officials of Sampath Bank, the only Bank in Sri Lanka, to offer the Infinite credit card, the most prestigious of Visa Card products.

Sunday, 10th July – White House State Dinner, from 7.30pm onwards at the Empire Ballroom, priced at LKR6000/-nett

“Scheib has proven that he can pretty satisfy any palette, and I had the privilege of working with him in an occasion in the US, which was an experience of a lifetime,” states Mr Anura Dewapura of Mount Lavinia Hotel. Other sponsors are Sampath Bank, and Stassens. And Walter Scheib was flown in by Sri Lanka’s very own national carrier: SriLankan Airlines.

Unique Green Tea dining experience at MLH

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Who says Green Tea is only for drinking now you can eat it too? Let MLH give you a Matcha Green Tea experience like no other..

We are all part of the hype about green tea being good for us. Fortunately, MLH has done their homework and now have taken on what many in Japan have known for centuries : to get the full benefits of the green tea plant, the maximum impact, you have to “get the best and drink and indeed eat it whole”: Matcha. Well MLH is going completely Matcha and it is all about Green Tea from 13th to 19th June 2011 at the Governors Restaurant.

Mr Anura Dewapura states, Rather than just drinking green tea leaf-infused water, when you consume Matcha, you’re actually getting the whole green tea leaf, so you’re drinking or even eating the full benefits of the best of the green tea leaf.

But here’s the amazing thing that many don’t know: MLH has taken the Matcha green tea and is serving up a storm with a variety of dishes and beverages that are tasty innovative and yes and extremely healthy too. Wow!

Matcha Fruit Smoothies – Ambarella Star Fruit Banana, Mango, Avocado, Guava or Tropical Mixed Fruit, Iced Matcha Latte, Hot Matcha Latte, Frappuccino – Strong matcha green tea served with foamed milk also flavoured with Caramel – Mocha – Coconut – Mocha – White Chocolate -Vanilla – Gingersnap-Almond-Spicy, Minty Matcha  – Melon Liqueur, Crème de Menthe Green, Crème de Cocao White, Cream

Mint Leaves and Cherry, Dreaming of ZEN ZEN Green Tea Liqueur, Melon Liqueur, are a few to mention from the beverage menu. Some of the healthy and delectable  dishes to be savoured are Tea Smoked Salmon Carpaccio, Matcha “Pearls” , Local Clams Cooked in a Broth of Green Tea, Garlic, Peppercorns and Fresh Herbs served with Crusty French Bread, Lagoon Prawns with Green Tea Sauce and Cucumber-Pepper Salsa, Green Tea Noodles With Tempura of Tofu, Miso Broth and Toasted Nori, Green Tea Nori Wrapped Rare Tuna on Wok Fried Sesame Green Vegetables, Sesame Crusted Filet of Modha, Green Tea Tapioca Pearls, Asparagus Spears with a Spiced Mushroom-Tea Broth. And not forgetting the desserts that you will be asking for more are :Green Tea and Cinnamon Smoked Filet Mignon with Wild Mushroom and Green Tea Arancini With Balsamic Glaze, Decadent Green Tea Cheesecake with Bittersweet Chocolate Curls, Trio of Mini Green Tea Iced Cupcakes.

MLH celebrates World Volkswagen Day in partnership with The Volkswagen Beetle Owners Club

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

Only Vehicle that has an international day significance…..

The name Volkswagen became synonymous world-over thanks to it ingenious design that took the world by storm. Volkswagens were somewhat like street furniture in every “nook and crevice” of the world and one could say that if there ever was a road built in the world, in all probability a VW would have traveled on it.

Built on the underpinnings of “Peoples car” or “Strength through Joy” vehicle which was not up the street to many, the VW Beetle indeed conquered the world with over 21Million examples that reached the very top in car production in later years.

The Bug captured the hearts of many and remained a fashionable Icon throughout the Rock and Roll years of the fifties which followed through to the “Flower Power” era through to the seventies with the “Afro” hairstyles and the “Whale tail” jeans with the invasion of the Orange Bug that carried on through to the Eighties.

Digging deeper into the VW in home soil, the Beetle could be considered somewhat a “political statement” whilst looking at the renowned personalities who took the plunge in owning and driving a Beetle.

Many hard-winged politicians who fashioned the future of Sri Lankan politics owned a Beetle. There would be numerous photos of past events that shook this country which would include a Beetle in the foreground. One such photo is of a blockade of procession utilizing a VW Beetle which was owned by an ardent politician of that time. Many other photos are evident of left winged orators who owned Beetles as well, May it be Doctors, to Lawyers to Eminent personalities who carved their names in the recent past history books of Lanka, would have owned a VW Beetle at one time or another of their lives.

To many families, it was their first family car. It was the Childhood pride to many family members and to most who have treasured them having become “hand-me-downs” to follow-on generations. This is evident in the many split and oval glass beetles that emerge at the events organized by the VW Beetle Owners’ Club.

To the simplicity and robustness of this little Gem, the Beetle continued to be a daily runner in most cases having out-run its contemporaries thanks to its “never say die” ingenuity which would have brought on the honor of conferring a day to the make. So how come 22nd of June?  It was on the 22nd of June 1934, the work on first prototypes of The Peoples Car what became the Volkswagen Beetle was started by Ferdinand Porsche but it would take until 1936 before the first prototype was completed. This was the start of what was to be the star of stars or as some called it the Revenge of Hitler that brought about simple family transport to many from all corners of the world.

In retrospect of this day, The Volkswagen Beetle Owners Club has made arrangements to hold a VW Parade to be held on Sunday the 26th of June which would bring out the Bugs, all in shinning glory to proceed in parade form along the streets of Colombo ending-up at the historic Mount Lavinia Hotel. The Club also invites all other Volkswagen models to join in making this event a truly “Strength through Joy” vehicle.

All those who are interested in becoming a part of this event, please contact Peter Jasinghe – President of the VW Beetle Owners Club on 0777734232
