MLH excels at Travel Trade Sports and Chefs Guild of Lanka

Wednesday, August 21st, 2013

MLH believes award winning is important in any discipline, but particularly in the aspect of sports and the art of cooking, because every point of recognition and accolade adds to the brand’s credibility. An award by any measure is a sign of excellence – and it acknowledges the fact that peers and professionals agree that the brand or company excels in what they do. In specific disciplines such as sports and culinary events, the win is directly hinged to people’s well-being and happiness. And in reciprocity the guest too benefits. In this regard, it is important for a brand to have the backing of an award to signify their knowledge and understanding and indeed showing camaraderie and togetherness to achieve their vision of being above the rest.

Well MLH indeed just did that when Geethma and Sashini won gold in the Bar categories at the recently held Chefs Guild of Lanka. “The presence of awards is important to show what we know and how our passions surface excellence,” states Geethma who won in the Mocktail and Cocktail categories. She was a Youth trainee and her love for being a flaring bartender has always been a dream. She won gold a few years ago in the Marie Brizard and Spice Festival and now does MLH proud again with her wins. In the kitchen categories Ajith Jayasekera an expert in the field of ice carving made MLH proud by winning Gold Excellent in the category of Showpiece. Others who won Gold were Bandula in the Salt Showpiece category.

Like the mission of the Travel Sports Club states to strive for excellence in all your endeavours, well MLH did exactly that when they won Gold at the recently concluded Travel Trade Carrom Tournament. The Travel Trade Sports Club inaugurated in 1976, is currently the leading sports club representing the travel industry in Sri Lanka. The team won gold in the categories of Mens Singles, Womens Doubles and Mixed Double while obtaining runners up feat in the Mens Doubles, and Mens Singles.

Faulty Towers The Dining Experience – globetrotting show touches down in Sri Lanka

Interactive Theatre International presents their Sri Lanka debut

Born in Australia and feted around the world, this globe-trotting show makes its Sri Lankan debut this October at the Mount Lavinia Hotel. It arrives during a world tour that’s taking in 20 countries this year alone, which includes an ongoing residency in London’s West End, a month at Edinburgh Fringe, and a premiere at Sydney Opera House. Internationally acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.

This is fully immersive, highly improvised and site-specific comedy theatre at its best, a pitch perfect tribute to the BBC’s Fawlty Towers. The fun starts as the audience waits to be seated and then hurtles along for two hours. With only a third of the show scripted, everything stays fresh as Basil, Sybil and Manuel serve a 3-course meal with a good dollop of mayhem – as the audience play the part of their restaurant diners. Expect all the best gags and a ‘rip-roaringly hilarious night out’ (This Is London).

– ‘a two-hour eat, drink and laugh sensation’ (Daily Telegraph, UK)

– ‘ingenious… the best comedy show I have ever been to’ (Sunday Express, Edinburgh Fringe)

– ‘amazing talents!’ (Australian Stage)

Faulty Towers The Dining Experience was born in Brisbane in 1997 and made its international debut in 2008 at the Edinburgh Fringe, where it’s sold out every year since. Last year it opened a residency in London’s West End, where it continues throughout 2013. Eight teams of cast from both hemispheres now tour the world non-stop, appearing in 20 countries this year. The cast for Mount Lavinia features Karen Hamilton as Sybil, Paul O’Neill as Basil, and Geoffrey Reczek as Manuel.

Notes to editors:
– Faulty Towers The Dining Experience is an affectionate homage to Fawlty Towers the TV series written by John Cleese and Connie Booth. Their original TV scripts are not used in Faulty Towers The Dining Experience. Artistic director and company co-founder, Alison Pollard-Mansergh says:
‘Faulty is spelled that way because when I started this show in 1997, John Cleese, Prunella Scales and Andrew Sachs were still young enough to have performed the roles. I didn’t want people to think they were getting the original, so I spelled it differently. Happily, the BBC and Mr Cleese know what we are doing and we work often with the BBC.’

– The show has eight teams of cast who continue to tour the UK and the world non-stop. It will be appearing in over 20 countries in 2013.
– Faulty Towers: The Dining Experience opened a London West End residency in October 2012, selling out immediately and winning five star reviews. By the end of November it had become top of TimeOut London’s Top 10 Best Selling West End Theatre Shows and featured as Editor’s Pick in several entertainment and theatre listings. The residency continues throughout 2013, with seven shows a week, every week of the year.

Friday, August 16th, 2013

Slow Food being popular all over the world and now in Sri Lanka thanks to Mount Lavinia Hotel’s efforts, surfaces Coast of Italy to the Paradise Beach: Slow Food Italian night with Chef Rizzoli Riccardo. Chef Riccardo who is the Executive Chef in the Vakarufalhi Island Resort, a sister property of the Mount Lavinia Hotel Group in the Republic of Maldives, states the 24th August 2013 at the Beach Hut from 7pm onwards, will be a night of fresh out of the sea seafood, full of its fragrances and enriched by the authentic flavours and seasoning of Italy. Particularly from the Amalfi Coast the natural fusion of flavours creates a wide variety of irresistible dishes which will be served to all diners.

The chapter in Sri Lanka’s main objective is to pioneer taste and food education, in a casual setting yet family style. “Our next initiative is to join hands with a small scale farmer, breeder, fishers and food artisans whose approach to food production protects the environment and communities. They in turn get into the limelight with us and of course you who join in on the 24th of August too become part of this circle or force of improving the food system,” states Indika Jayawardena, President of the Slow Food Chapter in Sri Lanka.

The Italian Slow Food concept which rides on the farm to table motto, offers the freshest dishes prepared from local ingredients found within the destination. The Slow Food Italian night on the 24th of August will highlight items such as Homemade Squid Ink Strozzapreti, Fried Calamari with Spicy Basil Pesto, Sciatelli (Amalfi coast homemade pasta) with clams and mussels and over 10 recipes that brings out the true flavours of the Amalfi coast. Chef Riccardo who hails from the region states, “Slow Food is about a collected thought of tastes, tradition and consciousness.” With events as such these communities or Slow Food lovers grows every day, making the Slow Food concept of good, clean and fair practices a reality.

He avers that as Slow Food endorses that strong link between plate and planet, the Slow Food night will be a balance of simple choices, respecting of raw materials, attention to detail exalted with authentic seasonings of Italy, since eating well is to feel good.

Celebrating 50 years of married life

Friday, August 9th, 2013

The golden anniversary is one of the most celebrated wedding anniversaries known across the world. And rightly so! Spending half a century in love with one person is a wonderful statement about the gift of married life. And many would consider it the hallmark of many marriages and indeed the children of Chitra and Samarasiri Rajapaksa believed so. Since they tied the knot in majestic Mount Lavinia Hotel in 1963, they decided to have a small gathering to recognize their parents at the hotel.
“We loved the hotel so much that we had a replica of the hotel as our cake structure in 1963,” states Mr Rajapaksa. “It was a beautiful day and indeed tonight brings us back to the days of yon,” avers Mrs Rajapaksa. It is important to do something to recognize this milestone. The 50th anniversary is a golden opportunity that cannot go unnoticed, states an official from MLH.
