A Longstanding Love Affair with CHOCOLATE at MLH this Valentine Season

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Chocolate is as big a part of anyone’s life and indeed has the power to captivate like no other food. But its roots run much deeper. It begins to melt, giving your mind and body a wonderful sensation..So why Chocolate for the month of February?? Mr Anura Dewapura believes that something like chocolate that creates such emotional bonds – and also actually can be good for you – is just another reason to enjoy chocolate for the month of February.

Chocolate cravers need not fear, the month of February is once again ruled by Mount Lavinia Hotel. When the whole hotel will be covered with chocolate and it will be Chocolate cravers and chocoholics, preferred choice. The chocolate menu for the month is as follows:

Truffles for couples from 11am to 2230hrs at the Terrace from 3rd to 5th Feb- Rich, chocolate truffles are a decadent treat for any occasion, especially romantic and delicious ones with frappes and milkshakes to complement the delicacy.. While the classic chocolate truffle appeals to many couples, there is a wide range of truffle flavors and rich combinations to tickle any taste buds. Truffles at MLH will be enrobed in white chocolate – a smooth buttercream with no actual cocoa – sweet milk chocolate, or more luxurious dark chocolate, and couples can choose from dozens of popular flavors for a gourmet treat.

Chocolate Beverage Menu throughout the whole month from 11am to 2230hrs at the Terrace –Looking for a way to brighten up your evenings? Try some alcoholic hot chocolate drink recipes. Hot chocolate is a staple for kids, but these recipes will turn it into a treat that adults will also crave. These drinks are great for entertaining or just just getting cozy with that special someone this Valentine season.

Want hot cocoa that tastes like a candy bar? You have to check it out at MLH

Chocolate High Tea at the Terrace 1430hrs to 1730hrs – “We call it High tea with a Twist” – On regular offer are cucumber sandwiches, crumpets, traditional scones, cakes and other finger sandwiches however The menu will combine healthy intepretations of old classics, such as sweet and savoury cup-cakes and “no bread” sandwiches, using healthy-alternative ingredients such as flour substitutes and créme fraîche instead of cream. Fresh fruit purees replace unrefined sugar and olive oil is used instead of butter. And not forgetting

To drink is a selection of fruit infusions, mocktails and eco-tinis made with London Gin. I recommend the Ultimate Iced Tea.

12th Feb – CICCOROSSOPASSIONE – Chocolate Dinner Extraordinaire – with Fabio Federico…A dinner with Slowcore, ambient and melancholic music to serenade you by Fabio Federico. For LKR4000/-nett and MLH’s very own Chef Rossilli will indulge you in a three course set menu topped with Ferrero Rocher that definitely surfaces fine taste.

19th Feb – Tour of Cacao and Chocolate Martini Mixology session – One will learn to pour like a pro and mix like a master, to properly set up a bar, different ways to serve drinks, what garnishes go with which cocktails, and how to make some favorites including a selection of Chocolate and Dessert Cocktail. After the class, a complimentary hour open bar will be held to mix and mingle, And indeed a tour on the cacao producing countries.

26th Feb – Chocolate and Wine pairing with Slow food Mexican– Some say it can’t be done, pairing wine with chocolate, but once the right wine is found to complement the right chocolate it can be a match made in heaven! Whether pairing a delicate white chocolate or a lively dark chocolate with wine, there are a few pairing tips that will be tried at the Mexican Slow Food Night where guests can indulge in a Chocolate and Wine pairing session topped with a Mexican Slow Food Night.

27th Feb – Italian Winemakers Night dinner – LKR4500/-nett – From 8pm onwards at the Maitland State Room. The Winemaker from Castello Banfi Enrico Viglierchio and Mount Lavinia Hotels and Resorts very own Chef Riccardo Rossili will be preparing the meal.

Then the Weekend of Love from the 12th to the 14th of Feb with the Beach Huts on the Lavinia Beach and the Baywatch Tower igniting for two. Misty a talked about name at MLH will liven up the Terrace on 14th Feb too.

The Chocolate covered Sunday Jazz Brunch on 13th February, “we got some great event partners like Ferrero Rocher, Qatar Airways and indeed the Embassy of Italy with us who have confirmed their participation in getting this great initiative from strength to strength,” stated Mr Dewapura. Who is a chocoholic himself, his Hershey experience in the US has added to the birth of “An Affair with Chocolate” at the Mount Lavinia Hotel which has now become an annual event in MLH.

Mr Anura Dewapura, General Manager of the Mount Lavinia Hotel avers, “I didn’t think I could enhance the chocolate experience, but this is definitely a new sensual experience. Various tastes can either interconnect or collide with the flavors of different bars of chocolates, so you might want to experiment this wonderful initiative.”

There is lot to experience. Call 2711430 for further details.

2nd Winemakers night: and exquisite pairing with Castello Banfi and Chef Rossilli’s Italian cuisine at MLH

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

THE wines of Castello Banfi are generally characterised by a strong structure with full body, fruity yet low in sugar content. The grapes used in making the wines are grown along the slopes that lie between the medieval hilltop town of Montalcino in the region of Tuscany, Italy, and the Mediterranean Sea, and uniquely carry notes of fruits like lemon, banana and grapefruit that give the wines their aromatic hint.

This is the uniqueness of Banfi wines which we have to retain. Wines are evaluated by the consumers’ senses, not by industry parameters. “Many a time, we drink wines without understanding what wine is and how it is to be approached. “Drinking wine is for pleasure; it is not a must-have like water. The key concept we are investing in, through Castello Banfi wines, is that a wine must be a consumer’s choice,” explained the General Manager of Banfi, Enrico Viglierchio.

Viglierchio will now visit MLH on 27th Feb for an exclusive Castello Banfi winemakers dinner organized jointly with Alpha Orient at the Maitland State Room.

We like to minimize it to 40 guests with a six-course dinner featuring Italian cuisine from the regions of Tuscany and a few dishes synonymous to the Mediterranean Sea Regions especially created to match the selected wines.” The Price is set for LKR4500/-nett which includes food and beverage and an experience of a lifetime.

The creations will be whipped up by our very own Italian Chef Riccardo Rossilli who has more than 10 years’ experience in Italian cuisine, and who is now the Executive Chef in Vakarufalhi: the Mount Lavinia Hotels and Resorts property in the Republic pf Maldives.

As Anura Dewapura, the General Manager says “It is about putting diners in touch with other people, for some light hearted conversation over great food and wine. The first winemakers night was a great success hence we thought to continue is to make people happier. Some people would see it as a more relaxed form of networking accompanied by the chef and wine connoisseur to add some insights into the dining experience. So why not join us for a very special event when Chef Rossilli prepares a masterful, multi-course, gourmet dinner paired with Castello Banfi winning wines with our objective being to establish an unique experience that the discerning public can become involved in”

Mount Lavinia Hotel celebrated an historic occasion with the unveiling of four blue plaques installed in the main entrance of the hotel on Monday 31st January 2011.

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

The blue plaque is an iconic symbol seen on many buildings in and around London, which bring buildings to life, indicating places where important people in history have lived and worked.

The 4 blue plaques were acquired by Mount Lavinia Hotel across the seas from Britain to Sri Lanka to celebrate the historic link between the 2 countries and the remarkable significance that Mount Lavinia played as the residence of 4 British Governors; Sir Thomas Maitland, Sir Robert Brownrigg, Sir Edward Paget and Sir Edward Barnes and continues to play uniting the past with the present;

Mount Lavinia Hotel celebrated this link between person and building and in the words of the Times Correspondent in 1873 in so doing we make ‘our houses their own biographies’.

After the unveiling the guests enjoyed a riveting illustrated lecture on the roles these 4 British Governors played during their Governorship in Ceylon given by Dr SinhaRaja Tammitta–Delgoda. This was followed by a reading from the famous British novelist Louis de Bernieres, who is most well-known for his book ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’, read a short extract from his mother’s unpublished work. His mother had been stationed in Ceylon during World War 11 and had written a story set at the Mount Lavinia Hotel.

In line with the theme of the blue plaques the hotel was lit up in blue in marking this historic moment in its history.
