A message of light and hope on St Lucia’s Day at  Mount Lavinia Hotel

Maintaining and fostering traditions is one main factor that differ MLH to the rest. One of hotel’s most important and treasured events is, celebrating St Lucia’s day the patron St of light. The message of light and hope will resonate among all who would be participating at this event which will take place on 13th December, at the Courtyard. St Lucia is rich with religious history and symbolism. Swedens shining custom is definitely what we at MLH believe in too. Faith  and tradition.

Around Christmas time in Sweden, one of the biggest celebrations is St. Lucia’s Day. December 13th is the “name day” of St Lucia, a young girl who was martyred for her Christian beliefs in the 4th century in Sicily at the time of Emperor Diocletian. However, it is in Sweden that she is most remembered today. St. Lucia’s Day is now celebrated by a girl dressing in a white dress with a red sash round her waist and a crown of candles on her head. Small children sometimes like dressing up as Lucia. Also boys might dress up as ‘Stjärngossar’ (star boys) and girls might be ‘tärnor’ (like Lucia but without the candles).  On the early morning of December 13th, the Swedish households, mother or daughter, niece or granddaughter is appointed to act the part of Lucia by wearing a long sleeved white robe with a red sash around the waist and on her head she wears a wreath of seven lighted candles and wakes the other family members by serving them morning coffee, buns and “pepparkakor” (ginger snaps) singing the ancient Lucia song, “Santa Lucia”.

The night will be lit with the angelic sounds of Sri Lanka’s renowned Choirs – Souls Sounds Academy choir and Voice Print. As the choirs sing festive melodies filling your minds with fondest Christmas memories, you can warm yourself up or cool down with a variety of hot and cold drinks with a fabulous spread of Christmas cookies, traditional saffron buns and much more to tuck into.

With the same objective of spreading light and hope throughout the season and the coming year, join us on 13th December and be a part of this event, in recreating St Lucia’s day at MLH. Tickets priced at Rs 500/-.
